Beginner Heroes: Abilities and Practical Tips

Gideon, Morigesh, Greystone, and Zarus offer approachable starting points with different combat rhythms. Their tools introduce ranged positioning, sustained pressure, melee survival, and choosing when to commit to a fight.

Gideon: Ranged Spellcasting With an Escape

Gideon is a mage whose ranged basic attack and damaging abilities let him pressure enemies without standing directly beside them. His portal moves him a short distance, while his ultimate deals damage in a large area and pulls enemies toward its center.

That combination gives you ways to contribute from range and reposition when an opponent closes in. The portal has a catch: enemies can follow through it, although doing so slows them.

  • Keep melee opponents at range. Use your reach instead of walking into their attacks.
  • Choose your portal destination carefully. Put useful distance between yourself and a pursuer, remembering that the portal allows pursuit.
  • Look for grouped enemies before using your ultimate. Its area damage and pull can affect multiple opponents.

Morigesh: Marks and Damage Over Time

Morigesh is a mage who pressures enemies through damage over time and interactions with marked targets. Her damaging abilities apply Pestilence, which continues dealing damage for three seconds.

Marking an enemy also changes how other abilities affect that target. Her hive slows marked enemies, while passing through a marked enemy with Swarm restores four times more health. Swarm also provides a movement speed boost.

These interactions make target selection central to her kit: the enemy you mark creates opportunities for follow-up pressure and healing.

  • Mark your intended target before following up. Take advantage of the additional effects on marked enemies.
  • Use the hive’s slow to pressure that target. Pair the movement restriction with your damaging abilities.
  • Look for a marked enemy when you need Swarm’s stronger heal. Plan your movement around that interaction while keeping clear of unnecessary frontline damage.

Greystone: Melee Pressure and Staying Power

Greystone is a fighter built around basic attacks and surviving close combat. He periodically blocks basic attacks, can enhance his own attacks with bonus damage and a slow, and surrounds himself with a damaging fiery whirlwind.

His leap helps him close a gap or escape. His ultimate heals him while damaging and slowing nearby enemies, giving him another tool for staying involved in a fight.

  • Use the whirlwind when enemies are within its radius. Keep your target close enough for the surrounding damage to connect.
  • Decide whether you need your leap for pursuit or escape. Spending it to reach an opponent also spends a way out.
  • Use your ultimate when its healing matters. Look for an opportunity to recover health while affecting nearby enemies.

Zarus: Flexible Fighting and Committed Duels

Zarus is a melee fighter with a spear throw, damage blocking, and an evade. His passive builds additional physical power during combat; outside combat, that power gradually falls away and restores health.

His spear deals extra damage to targets below 20 percent health. His ultimate creates a 5.5-second duel and grants permanent physical power if the enemy is killed.

  • Aim your spear at a low-health target when the opportunity appears. Its extra damage rewards recognizing an enemy within that threshold.
  • Use your damage block against incoming pressure. Make the defensive tool part of your fighting rhythm.
  • Choose an ultimate target you can finish. The permanent power reward depends on securing the kill.
  • Disengage when you need to recover. Let the passive’s out-of-combat healing work before committing again.
