Who Is Kaelen in Predecessor?

The Predecessor new hero is Kaelen, an ice-wielding jungle tank who makes standing your ground dangerous. He arrived on November 3 with V1.18: Frostbite, bringing persistent ice fields, conditional roots, and an ultimate that lets him cross large walls. His kit rewards setting up Frostbite before committing to a dash, giving you a clear reason to plan your engage.

Kaelen is a knight from the frozen north, sworn to protect the innocent while struggling with a wolf curse. He travels alongside Scarlett in search of a cure, fighting with twin greatswords and the cold of his homeland.

That combination carries into his gameplay: sweeping melee damage, repeated slows, and defensive bonuses that reward fighting on his own ice.

How Rimeglass and Frostbite Work

Predecessor — How Rimeglass and Frostbite Work

Heart Of Ice, Kaelen’s passive, connects his abilities through patches of Rimeglass. These patches remain on the ground for 6 seconds.

Enemies standing on Rimeglass receive Frostbite for 1 second. Frostbite applies:

  • A 15% slow.
  • 0.5% of the affected enemy’s Max Health as True Damage every 0.5 seconds.

Frostbite also changes Winter’s Pursuit, turning its slow into a root against enemy Heroes and doubling its damage against affected units. Applying the status before dashing is central to Kaelen’s ability sequence.

Keep fights on your Rimeglass whenever possible. Alongside the damage and slow, standing on it strengthens the armor bonus provided by Razorstorm.

Kaelen’s Abilities Explained

Kaelen’s basic attack, Pale Twins, deals 65 (+80% Bonus Physical Power) Physical Damage, with a melee range of 325u and 25% cleave.

His four active abilities provide the following cooldowns and Mana costs. Values separated by slashes follow ability rank.

Razorstorm: Sustained Damage and Armor

Kaelen spins his greatswords for 3.5 seconds, striking enemies within a 400u radius every 0.25 seconds while continuously creating Rimeglass beneath himself. Its Physical Damage scales with Total Physical Power and Max Health.

Hard crowd control cannot interrupt the spinning damage: Razorstorm continues even while Kaelen is stunned. That property applies to the ability continuing; Kaelen can still be affected by the stun.

Razorstorm also passively increases total Physical and Magical Armor by 4/6/8/10/12%, with that bonus multiplied by 1.5 while standing on Rimeglass.

Against jungle camps, each strike deals 5 additional damage to Monsters. Against Minions, its damage operates at 60% effectiveness.

Winter’s Pursuit: Apply Frostbite Before Dashing

Winter’s Pursuit sends Kaelen forward 1100u, stopping just beyond the first enemy Hero he hits. It damages units along the path and normally slows them by 25% for 1.2 seconds.

Its damage is 70/95/120/145/170 (+100% Bonus Physical Power) Physical Damage.

Against a unit already affected by Frostbite, the damage doubles. Enemy Heroes with Frostbite are rooted for 1.2 seconds instead of slowed.

Apply Frostbite before using the dash when you want its root and increased damage.

Rimefang: Create an Approach Through Terrain

After a 0.6-second channel, Kaelen releases a spirit that travels 2250u, passes through terrain, and creates a trail of Rimeglass.

Enemies it passes through take 11/12/13/14/15% of their Max Health as Physical Damage, receive a 0.2-second stun, and are slowed by 50% for 1.5 seconds.

Use the spirit’s terrain penetration to threaten enemies across a wall, then watch their movement before committing Winter’s Pursuit. The trail gives you another way to bring Frostbite into the approach.

Frostfall: Reposition Above the Fight

Frostfall begins with a 1.5-second channel, followed by up to 4 seconds airborne. During that airborne period, Kaelen has 1275 Movement Speed, can travel over large walls and ledges, and is immune to damage effects.

Reactivate the ability to descend early, or land when the airborne duration ends. Impact deals 200/300/400 (+100% Bonus Physical Power) (+6% Bonus Health) Physical Damage and slows enemies by 40% for 1.5 seconds.

Enemies caught in the center are rooted for 1.5 seconds.

The landing also creates an 8-second Frost Storm, continuously applying Frostbite and doubling its damage. Aim the center at a priority target, and place the wider storm across the space enemies need to cross.

A Practical Kaelen Engage Sequence

Build your engage around the interaction between Rimeglass, Frostbite, and Winter’s Pursuit:

  1. Send Rimefang through the approach. Use its range and terrain penetration to damage enemies and lay down Rimeglass.
  2. Watch for Frostbite. Commit the dash once your target has the status needed for its enhanced effect.
  3. Use Winter’s Pursuit to root the target. The Frostbite interaction doubles the dash’s damage and replaces its slow with immobilization.
  4. Activate Razorstorm at close range. Keep enemies within its damage radius while creating more Rimeglass beneath yourself.

When initiating with Frostfall, aim its central root at the target you want to hold. Follow with Winter’s Pursuit while that target is affected by the storm’s Frostbite.

Avoid spending every movement ability just to reach melee range. Use Rimefang’s reach to set up an approach, and take advantage of Frostfall’s airborne movement when crossing terrain matters.

Kaelen’s Three Augments

Relentless Hunt

Relentless Hunt adds one Razorstorm strike for every 20% Attack Speed owned, up to 10 additional strikes, and allows Razorstorm to critically strike.

The tradeoff is explicit: Rimeglass no longer grants armor.

Account for that lost defensive benefit when choosing an attack-focused setup. This augment changes both Razorstorm’s damage behavior and the protection you receive on your ice.

Neverending Chase

Hits from Pale Twins or abilities against Heroes and Camp Leaders reduce Winter’s Pursuit’s cooldown by 3% per hit.

Keep connecting attacks and abilities after using the dash to work toward its next cast. Camp Leaders count for this effect, giving the augment an interaction beyond Hero fights.

Last Winter

Last Winter gives allies within Frostfall’s targeting zone 20% Movement Speed for 3 seconds.

Upon landing, Kaelen also receives a shield for 4 seconds, equal to 10% Max Health plus another 4% Max Health per enemy Hero hit.

Place the targeting zone where teammates can benefit from the movement bonus, and aim your landing to catch multiple enemy Heroes for a larger shield.

V1.18 Items That Interact With His Kit

Kaelen starts with 695 Health, gaining 131 per level. His abilities include Max Health and Bonus Health scaling, while V1.18 introduces two defensive items with health-based shields.

Vortex Stone

Immobilizing an enemy Hero reduces your current basic ability cooldowns by 20% and grants a 12% Max Health shield for 4 seconds. The effect has a 12-second cooldown.

Use Kaelen’s immobilizing abilities to trigger it: Winter’s Pursuit roots Frostbitten Heroes, Rimefang briefly stuns, and Frostfall roots enemies at the center of its landing.

Pay attention to which abilities are already cooling down when the effect triggers, since the reduction applies to their current cooldowns.

Forticus

Taking Hero damage grants an 8% Max Health shield for 3.5 seconds, with a cooldown of 14–10 seconds based on Hero level.

Its second passive, Swell, activates when dealing or taking Hero damage. Each second, it adds 0.6% Base Health, 4 Movement Speed, and 0.5% Size. Continued Hero combat refreshes its 3-second timer; all accumulated stats disappear when that timer expires.

Keep the timer in mind during extended exchanges. Its stacking benefits depend on maintaining Hero combat.

Kaelen’s Launch Skins and Bundles

Kaelen launches with Quantum Kaelen, an Epic skin, alongside two bundles that include the Hero.

The Quantum Kaelen Bundle contains the skin, Chromatic, Photon, and Military variants, the “This Yours?” overhead emote, a banner, a profile icon, and Kaelen Premium Affinity.

The Kaelen Variant Bundle includes Ebony, Gold, Red, and Silver variants, plus an Ebony banner and profile icon.

His launch also supports the Wolf Conservation Center, with 10% of sales of Kaelen’s Quantum skin and bundles donated to the organization.

For another customization option, Kaelen has a Voice Comms pack that replaces generic comms-wheel callouts with his own voice. Purchasing the pack once applies it across every skin you own for him.
