Predecessor Ranked Guide: Climb to Master and Paragon

How Ranked Works After the V1.18 Reset

Reaching Master now opens a race for just 100 Paragon spots. This Predecessor ranked guide covers the V1.18 ladder changes and the lane, build, and objective decisions that help turn leads into wins. Learn the new promotion and decay rules before you queue so you can plan both your climb and your breaks.

The V1.18: Frostbite ranked reset sends every player back to placements for the new split. The new split requires:

  • 5 placement matches for returning ranked players.
  • 10 placement matches if you are new to Ranked or have not played in a while.

Master now sits between Diamond I and Paragon. Above Diamond, climbing involves both earning VP and maintaining enough activity to prevent decay.

Split 5 Rewards and Royal Wukong Variants

Split 5 rewards used your peak rank. Completing placements earned the icon and banner for that peak, while 15 wins unlocked Royal Wukong and any qualifying rank variants.

How to Reach Master and Paragon

At the top of Diamond I, you must win a promotion game to enter Master. Once promoted, your VP has no upper cap, and match results award +11 VP for a win or deduct 11 VP for a loss.

Paragon adds a leaderboard requirement:

RequirementV1.18 rule
Become eligible for ParagonReach at least 200 VP in Master
Earn a Paragon positionSecure a place in the Top 100
Promotion game into ParagonNone
Leaderboard refreshEvery 24 hours
Retain Paragon at refreshRemain in the Top 100

200 VP makes you eligible; it does not guarantee Paragon. Your position still depends on how much VP the other contenders have earned.

At the daily refresh, players outside the Top 100 return to Master. Between refreshes, demotion to Diamond is the only way to lose Paragon early.

Once you approach eligibility, watch your leaderboard position alongside your VP. Build beyond the entry threshold rather than treating it as a finish line.

How VP Decay Works in Master and Paragon

VP decay is active in both Master and Paragon in V1.18. Promotion into Master sets your activity bank to 10 days, giving you time before inactivity starts costing points.

The bank works like this:

  • Each match played adds 1 banked day.
  • You can hold a maximum of 14 banked days.
  • At 10:00 UTC each day, the bank decreases.
  • If the bank is already empty, you lose 25 VP instead.
  • Decay can demote you out of Master.

Matches replenish the bank through participation, so a win is not required to add a day.

Before taking a break, check your bank and replenish it toward the cap. Plan around the daily UTC deduction, especially when your VP is close to a demotion boundary.

What Happens When a Teammate Goes AFK?

V1.18 reduces the VP penalty for players who remain in a match with an AFK teammate. The loss is now 5%–25% of a normal loss, down from 20%–40%.

For a match that would normally cost 18 VP, the reduced penalty is 1–4 VP.

Players who go AFK face a separate consequence when they are demoted: their AFK-related VP deduction is applied after demotion, leaving them with less VP in the lower rank.

Keep playing through a difficult lane. A lost lane still leaves opportunities to contribute damage, protect a teammate, or help secure an objective; abandoning the match removes those options.

Control Your Wave and Finish Your Items

Stop pushing without a purpose

Repeatedly attacking every minion drives the wave toward the enemy side. That gives the opposing laner a safer place to farm while leaving you farther forward when the enemy jungler approaches.

When you want a safer lane position, focus on last hits and hold the wave near your tower without letting it move under tower fire. As support, avoid clearing the wave with abilities when your carry is trying to maintain that position.

Push deliberately when preparing to move toward an objective. Coordinate the wave clear with your lane partner so you are not trying to freeze while they are trying to leave.

Buy components toward a completed item

Tier 2 components are steps toward Tier 3 items. Filling your inventory with pieces from unrelated item trees delays those completed purchases.

On each recall:

  • Continue the item you are building.
  • Buy its next component when you cannot afford completion.
  • Avoid waiting in lane solely for enough gold to finish if you already need to return.
  • Check how close you are to completion before branching into another purchase.

The goal is to turn each shop visit into progress toward a finished item, rather than accumulating disconnected components.

Rotate for Objectives and Support Your Strongest Teammate

Before committing to a neutral objective, look at the nearby lanes and your teammates’ positions. A carry farming a side resource cannot contribute damage to Fangtooth, and an isolated jungler is easier for the enemy team to collapse on.

Prepare the rotation:

  1. Handle immediate lane pressure. Clear threatening minions before leaving your tower exposed.
  2. Signal your movement. Use an on-the-way or objective callout so teammates can prepare.
  3. Join the objective when you can contribute. Bring your damage instead of continuing a nearby farm route while your team fights without it.
  4. Use enemy deaths to secure something. Move toward an objective or tower while opponents are unable to contest.

Keep callouts brief. Avoid excessive pinging.

Check your team’s levels, farm, and completed items when deciding whom to support. If a teammate has the lead, move with them when an objective is available and help prevent the enemy from surrounding them. Turn that player’s advantage into shared map progress.

Adjust Your Ranked Habits for Frostbite

Learn Kaelen’s setup before fighting him

Kaelen’s abilities create Rimeglass patches lasting 6 seconds. Enemies standing on them receive Frostbite, which slows them by 15% and deals damage over time.

His Winter’s Pursuit dash becomes more dangerous against a target already affected by Frostbite: its damage doubles, and enemy heroes are rooted instead of slowed.

Step away from Rimeglass before committing to a trade. Track the Frostbite setup before deciding whether you can safely stay in range of his dash.

His Razorstorm continues through hard crowd control, including stuns. Do not spend a stun expecting it to stop the spinning damage.

Account for the new frontline items

Vortex Stone costs 2350g and rewards immobilizing enemy heroes. Its effect reduces current basic ability cooldowns by 20% and grants a 12% Max Health shield for 4 seconds, with a 12-second cooldown. The shield is half as effective for ranged heroes.

When using it, account for the cooldown reduction after landing your immobilize. When fighting its user, watch for the shield and the earlier return of basic abilities.

Forticus costs 2900g and provides 325 Health, 55 Physical Armor, and 25 Tenacity. Taking hero damage triggers an 8% Max Health shield for 3.5 seconds, on a 14–10-second cooldown based on hero level.

Track that shield before spending your next burst of damage into a frontline target.

Keep Overclocked timings separate

Overclocked is a limited-time mode with accelerated gold, XP, cooldowns, and objective schedules. Its Fangtooth spawn time of 3m and 10-minute Orb Prime replacement time belong to that mode.

Use the objectives and timers in your Ranked match when planning rotations. Keep Overclocked’s accelerated economy and ability uptime out of your ranked build and combat expectations.
