Predecessor Guide: Roles, Farming, and Your First Win

How to Get Started in Predecessor

Winning your lane starts with earning gold and staying alive long enough to spend it. This Predecessor guide covers the roles, heroes, items, and map decisions that help you turn that advantage into a win. Focus on those fundamentals early, because every unnecessary death costs you time to farm and gives the enemy room to push.

Predecessor is Omeda Studios’ free-to-play, third-person MOBA. In a standard 5v5 match, your team wins by destroying the enemy Core. Getting there means pushing minion waves through lanes and breaking the structures protecting the enemy base.

You can play on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. For PC players, these features help you choose your setup:

Choose a Role and a Small Hero Pool

The standard map has three lanes, with jungle territory between them. Offlane and Mid Lane each have one player, while Carry and Support share Duo Lane. The Jungler farms monsters and moves between lanes.

Choose a main role, then learn a backup hero for the other positions. Role selection can leave you filling a spot someone else did not choose.

Offlane: Learn to Handle a Solo Matchup

Offlaners commonly play fighters or tanks that can trade damage and survive extended fights. Later, they can help initiate fights or protect teammates.

Greystone and Grux are beginner options. Pick Greystone for a durable, forgiving introduction, or Grux for a straightforward fighting kit.

Keep farming when the matchup gets difficult. Avoid turning every enemy attack into a prolonged duel, especially when their Jungler is missing.

Jungle: Farm Camps and Create Openings

Junglers gain resources from jungle monsters, then enter lanes to help teammates secure kills or force opponents back. This surprise attack is called a gank.

Khaimera and Feng Mao are starting options. Jungle also demands attention to several lanes and major objectives, so learn the map before making it your main role.

Look for enemies who have pushed far from safety. Keep clearing camps between opportunities instead of spending long stretches waiting for a fight.

Mid Lane: Manage Ability Damage and Rotations

Mid Laners commonly rely on abilities to deal damage. The central lane gives them access to other parts of the map, but enemies can also approach from either side.

Gideon and Morigesh are beginner picks. Learn their ability ranges and keep checking the minimap while farming.

Clear your wave before leaving to help another lane when possible. Ping missing enemies so teammates know a rotation might be coming.

Carry: Build Toward Sustained Damage

The Carry shares Duo Lane with Support and depends heavily on gold and items. Early positioning matters because ranged damage does little for your team if you die before using it.

Sparrow and Murdock are beginner choices. Prioritize minion last hits, stay within your attack range, and let your Support help create safe opportunities.

Support: Protect, Disrupt, and Provide Vision

Supports help their Carry survive, interfere with enemy movement, and place wards. Protecting an ally from an attacker is often called peeling.

Phase and Dekker offer protective utility. Let your Carry take routine minion last hits while you use your abilities and positioning to keep them safe.

Keep checking your teammates during fights. Save protective tools for the enemy threatening your damage dealers.

Farm Gold Without Giving Away Your Lane

Gold pays for items, and items increase your combat power. You earn gold through minion last hits, jungle camps, hero kills and assists, structures, and passive income.

For lane farming, concentrate on landing the killing blow on minions. Constantly attacking a wave can make it harder to control when each minion dies.

Practice this sequence:

  1. Watch a minion’s health while keeping the enemy hero in view.
  2. Time your attack to deliver the finishing hit.
  3. Move back to a safer position between attacks.
  4. Check the minimap before stepping forward again.

If you are playing Support, leave those routine finishing hits to your Carry.

Avoid sacrificing a whole wave to chase an opponent through the jungle. A retreating enemy has already given you room to farm, push, or recall.

When your health is low or you have gold to spend, look for a safe return to base. Recall from a protected position, then check your purchases before heading back out. Returning with a useful item component can make the next lane exchange much easier.

Use Auto Buy and Understand Your Crest

Auto Buy handles item purchases while you learn movement, abilities, and farming. Check the shop whenever you return to base so you understand which items you are building and what they provide.

Items progress from smaller components into stronger completed purchases. Read the component path instead of assuming you need to save enough gold for the entire finished item.

When choosing a build, match it to your hero and assigned role. A hero capable of playing multiple positions still needs equipment that supports the job you are doing in that match.

Check Your Starting Crest

A Crest occupies its own slot and develops during the match. Its eventual active ability adds another tool to your kit.

Read the Crest description before leaving base. Check that its damage type and role requirements fit your selection, especially when playing a hero outside their usual position.

Supports should pay particular attention to their gold-generating equipment. Choose the appropriate Support setup so your economy works alongside your Carry’s farming.

Learn Your Usable Items

Consumables and active items need deliberate input:

  • Health potions restore health over time. Use them early enough for that healing to matter.
  • Wards reveal an area and help warn you about approaching enemies.
  • Sentries help remove enemy wards and deny information.
  • Evolved Crest abilities provide an active effect. Read yours and learn its control before a fight.

Check your loadout after purchases or upgrades. An unused active ability cannot help you survive or finish a fight.

Place Wards and Read the Minimap

The third-person camera makes aiming and dodging central to combat, but it also demands regular minimap checks. Watch for missing enemies whenever you move forward in lane.

Use wards to cover the routes opponents would take to reach you:

  • River entrances near your lane.
  • Jungle paths connecting nearby lanes.
  • Approaches to Fangtooth and Orb Prime.
  • Objective pits before your team commits.

Place vision before pushing into exposed territory. Avoid walking alone into a dark jungle just to place a ward; approach with teammates or cover a safer entrance first.

Everyone contributes to vision. Supports have a major warding responsibility, while Junglers can use Sentries to clear enemy information before a gank or objective attempt.

When an opponent disappears, ping the warning and adjust your position. Back away if you cannot account for enemies who could reach your lane. Resume pressure when you have enough information to do it safely.

Prepare for Fangtooth and Orb Prime

Fangtooth and Orb Prime are major jungle objectives that grant valuable buffs. Learn their minimap icons so you can respond quickly when teammates call for them.

Prepare before attacking:

  1. Push nearby minion waves when safe.
  2. Spend gold and restore health before gathering.
  3. Place wards around the objective and its entrances.
  4. Check which allies can join and where enemies were last seen.
  5. Commit together when your team has a workable opening.

Avoid starting a boss simply because it is available. If teammates are far away and enemies control the surrounding jungle, regroup before committing.

A kill near an objective can create the opening your team needs. Use the enemy’s absence to take the boss or secure vision instead of chasing another opponent deeper into dangerous territory.

When your team cannot contest safely, use pings to coordinate a retreat or pressure elsewhere. An unsuccessful solo attempt can give away both the objective and your life.

Turn Each Stage of the Match Into Progress

Early Game: Secure Income and Learn the Matchup

Stay focused on your assigned lane or jungle route. Practice last hits, learn the enemy’s attack range, and ward before pushing forward.

Take favorable damage exchanges, then return to farming. Recall when necessary and use your gold rather than staying until an opponent forces you out.

Mid Game: Move With a Purpose

As towers fall, players gain more room to move between lanes. Check your wave and nearby objectives before rotating.

Join fights you can reach in time to influence. If a fight ends before you arrive, avoid continuing into enemy territory alone.

After a successful skirmish, identify the next practical target: a tower, a major objective, or a safe recall to purchase items.

Late Game: Position for the Fight You Can Win

Carries and ability damage dealers should keep enough distance to attack without walking into immediate danger. Frontline heroes should look for an opening their teammates can follow, while Supports watch for threats reaching the back line.

Attack enemies you can reach safely. Avoid running past several opponents just to reach their Carry.

When your team wins a fight, check your minion waves and the enemy’s remaining structures. Push an available lane, break the defenses in order, and attack the Core when the opening is there.
