Predecessor Items Guide: Build Smarter for Every Role

How to Choose Items That Fit Your Hero

Predecessor items shape how hard you hit, how long you survive, and whether your hero can do its job in a fight. Start with your damage type and main damage source, then adjust your purchases to the enemies causing problems. A carry relying on basic attacks needs a different build from a mage trying to land another rotation of abilities.

Before buying, answer three questions:

  • What powers your damage? Match physical or magical power to your hero’s damage scaling.
  • How do you deliver it? Separate basic-attack needs from ability-focused needs.
  • What is stopping you? Identify armor, healing, burst damage, or crowd control that interferes with your plan.

Build order matters, too. A scaling purchase aimed at late-game strength serves a different purpose from an item that helps you survive your lane immediately.

The Shop, Auto-Buy, and Item Slots

On keyboard, press G to open the shop. Its stat filters let you narrow the selection instead of reading every item whenever you return.

Leave auto-buy enabled during your first few games while learning movement, abilities, and your role. Once those basics feel comfortable, disable it and start choosing from your hero’s recommended items. Read each passive before buying so you understand what the purchase adds beyond its raw stats.

Treat recommended builds as a starting point. Keep purchases that support your hero’s damage pattern, then adjust the order when the enemy lineup demands a different answer.

Crests: Your Build’s Active Ability

Crests provide a separate decision from your regular item purchases. You select a starting Crest for free, complete its quest, and choose from three upgrades associated with that Crest.

Quest conditions depend on your selection. They can involve actions such as dealing damage near allies or taking damage and killing enemies. Read the objective when choosing your Crest so you know what advances it.

The upgraded Crest supplies an active ability. On keyboard, the guide’s activation binding is 2.

Choose the upgrade around what you need to accomplish in fights, and remember to activate it. Regular items provide stats and passive effects; the Crest adds an effect you deliberately use.

Crest choices loosely follow roles, but they can cross role boundaries. Match the choice to your hero’s playstyle rather than selecting solely by lane.

Stat Priorities for Every Role

Roles help narrow your shopping list, but your hero’s kit determines which stats deserve the most attention.

Mid Lane

Build magical power to increase ability damage and ability haste to shorten cooldowns. Add mana support when resource limits keep interrupting your ability use.

Include magical penetration when enemy magical armor becomes a problem. More power and better penetration address different parts of the damage calculation; consider both when comparing purchases.

Carry

Build around repeated basic attacks. Physical power improves their damage, attack speed increases their frequency, and critical strike chance adds another offensive scaling option.

Use lifesteal to gain healing from your damage. Keep physical penetration in consideration when armored enemies become difficult to hurt.

Support

Match defensive purchases to the damage threatening you. Prioritize physical armor against physical damage and magical armor against magical damage, alongside health.

Choose heal and shield power when your hero actually heals or shields. For other supports, focus on the durability and ability haste needed to keep contributing crowd control and utility.

Offlane and Jungle

Read the hero before following a role-wide shopping list. An ability-focused fighter and a basic-attack fighter can occupy the same role while needing different offensive stats.

For offlane, combine damage with enough health and armor to function in your intended frontline role. In jungle, identify your power type first, then choose ability haste or basic-attack effects to match how your hero fights.

Counter Tanks, Healing, and Burst Damage

Counterbuilding starts with identifying the specific obstacle. A large health pool, heavy armor, and repeated healing each call for a different response.

Against Tanks

Separate health damage from armor penetration or reduction when reading item descriptions. An effect that punishes health stacking does a different job from one that helps attacks get through armor.

Demolisher fills an anti-tank role against armor and health, while Perforator serves a penetration-focused burst role against less durable targets. Basilisk provides physical armor reduction for bruiser builds.

Compare those functions against the enemies you actually need to damage. Avoid choosing penetration items solely because they appear together in a copied build.

Against Healing

Look for healing reduction when enemy sustain is undoing your team’s damage. Tainted Guard combines a defensive armor role with a bleed and reduced healing.

Read how the effect applies before committing. Match the application condition to the way your hero interacts with enemies.

Against Burst and Crowd Control

Add appropriate defenses when an assassin keeps removing you before you can contribute. Stonewall fills a physical defensive role against burst threats.

Crowd control creates a different problem: surviving an attack does not necessarily let you finish an important ability. Truesilver-style ultimate protection appears in older itemization, but for your purchase decision, read the current shop effect and identify exactly what protects your hero’s cast.

Choose Passives and Purchase Timing Deliberately

An item’s passive can solve a problem that its stat line alone does not explain.

  • Fire Blossom: Its passive damage supports wave clear for tank builds.
  • Stormbreaker: Combines an on-hit role with wave-clear utility.
  • Augmentation: Supports empowered basic attacks and can contribute to turret pressure.
  • Oblivion Crown: Emphasizes magical power scaling and late-game burst.
  • Wellspring: Supports healing-focused utility builds.

Choose a passive your hero can put to work consistently. If your damage comes from abilities, inspect whether a basic-attack effect fits your actual combat pattern before buying it.

Purchase timing should follow the same reasoning. Buy scaling strength when you are building toward later fights; address immediate survival when dying prevents you from using your damage. When armor or healing starts deciding engagements, reconsider the next purchase instead of finishing the original sequence automatically.
