Kaelen punishes enemies who stay close, so build to survive long enough to keep them on his ice. This Predecessor Kaelen build focuses on health, defensive stats, and shields to support his job as a jungle tank. In V1.18: Frostbite, his damage already includes maximum-health scaling and true damage, giving you reasons to invest in durability.
Tank Build: Forticus and Vortex Stone
Build around Forticus and Vortex Stone, adjusting the purchase order to the damage threatening you. Both items provide health and shielding, while Kaelen’s crowd control gives him a direct way to activate Vortex Stone.
| Item | Cost | Base stats |
|---|---|---|
| Forticus | 2900g | 325 Health, 55 Physical Armor, 25 Tenacity |
| Vortex Stone | 2350g | 375 Health, 100% Base Health Regen, 100% Base Mana Regen, 10 Ability Haste |
Forticus for sustained frontline fights
Prioritize Forticus when enemy physical damage is forcing you out of fights. Its Immovable passive grants a shield equal to 8% Max Health after you take Hero damage. The shield lasts 3.5 seconds, with a cooldown that scales from 14–10 seconds based on Hero level.
Swell adds another reason to stay involved. Damaging an enemy Hero or taking Hero damage starts a three-second window during which Kaelen gains health equal to 0.6% Base Health, 4 Movement Speed, and 0.5% Size each second. These bonuses stack infinitely, but disappear when the timer expires.
Keep dealing damage while repositioning through your Rimeglass. Use the accumulating movement speed to follow a retreating target or pull back toward your teammates when the fight turns.
Vortex Stone for shields and follow-up abilities
Choose Vortex Stone earlier when you want its regeneration, ability haste, and engage-triggered protection. Immobilizing an enemy Hero activates Eye Of The Storm, reducing your current basic ability cooldowns by 20% and granting a 12% Max Health shield for four seconds. The passive has a 12-second cooldown.
Kaelen can immobilize enemies with Rimefang’s brief stun, Winter’s Pursuit against a Frostbitten Hero, and Frostfall’s center impact. Land that control while your other basic abilities are cooling down to get value from the cooldown reduction.
The reduction applies to remaining cooldowns; it does not immediately refresh your abilities.
Why health and armor fit his kit
Health contributes to Razorstorm’s damage, while Frostfall gains damage equal to 6% Bonus Health alongside its other scaling. Health also increases the maximum-health shields from Forticus and Vortex Stone.
Razorstorm passively increases total Physical and Magical Armor by 4/6/8/10/12%. Standing on Rimeglass multiplies that bonus by 1.5, bringing the rank-five increase to 18%. Stay on your ice while trading so your defensive purchases benefit from that amplification.

Last Winter: landing protection
Take Last Winter when you want protection after committing with Frostfall. Allies inside the targeting zone receive 20% Movement Speed for three seconds.
On landing, Kaelen receives a four-second shield equal to 10% Max Health, plus 4% Max Health per enemy Hero hit. Aim for clustered enemies when your teammates can follow the landing, rather than chasing a single target away from the fight.
Neverending Chase: repeated pursuit
Choose Neverending Chase to work toward more frequent uses of Winter’s Pursuit. Basic attacks and ability hits against Heroes and Camp Leaders reduce its cooldown by 3% per hit.
Continue attacking between ability casts to contribute to that reduction. Against Heroes, use your ice to keep the target close enough for those follow-up hits.
Relentless Hunt: an offensive alternative
Choose Relentless Hunt when deliberately building around attack speed and critical strikes. Razorstorm gains an additional strike for every 20% Attack Speed owned, up to 10 additional strikes, and its strikes can critically hit.
Account for the defensive tradeoff: Rimeglass no longer grants Armors with this augment. Adjust your positioning around that loss instead of assuming the same durability as the tank setup.
Skill Priority and Mana Management
For a tank-focused jungle setup, prioritize Razorstorm, take Frostfall upgrades when available, then favor Rimefang before finishing Winter’s Pursuit.

Razorstorm combines repeated area damage, continuous Rimeglass creation, and its passive armor increase. Its cooldown falls from 13 seconds to eight seconds across ranks. Against Monsters, every strike also deals 5 bonus damage.
Hard crowd control cannot interrupt an active Razorstorm: the swords continue spinning even while Kaelen is stunned. That does not make Kaelen immune to the stun or incoming damage, so activate it before expected control rather than relying on it as an escape.
Rimefang provides ranged setup. After a 0.6-second channel, its spirit travels 2250u, passes through terrain, and leaves Rimeglass along its path. Its damage scales from 11% to 15% of the target’s maximum health, while its slow remains 50% for 1.5 seconds.
Winter’s Pursuit retains its Frostbite interaction at every rank. Its 1100u dash deals double damage to Frostbitten units and roots Frostbitten enemy Heroes for 1.2 seconds instead of slowing them.
Watch your mana before committing. Kaelen starts with 310 Mana, while Winter’s Pursuit costs 80 Mana and Frostfall costs 100 Mana. Avoid spending your remaining mana on a pursuit that leaves you unable to use the next ability you need.
Combos, Ganks, and Frostfall Positioning

Apply Frostbite before dashing
Use this sequence when approaching a target with your basic abilities:
- Send Rimefang through their path. Its stun and slow create an opening, while the trail places Rimeglass beneath its route.
- Let Rimeglass apply Frostbite. The dash enhancement requires the debuff; landing Rimefang’s damage alone is not the condition.
- Connect Winter’s Pursuit. Against a Frostbitten Hero, it deals double damage and applies the root.
- Activate Razorstorm nearby. Follow their movement while generating fresh ice beneath your feet.
Heart Of Ice makes Rimeglass last six seconds. Enemies standing on it receive Frostbite for one second, slowing them by 15% and dealing 0.5% of their maximum health as true damage every 0.5 seconds.
Steer fights through those patches. Chasing beyond your ice gives up both the terrain pressure and, without Relentless Hunt, your amplified armor bonus.
Use Frostfall to control the landing area
Frostfall begins with a 1.5-second channel, followed by up to four seconds airborne. Damage immunity applies while Kaelen is in the sky. During that airborne phase, he has 1275 Movement Speed and can cross large walls and ledges.
Start the channel before you are in immediate danger, then use the airborne movement to choose an angle your team can reach. Reactivate to land early when an opening appears.
The impact slows enemies by 40% for 1.5 seconds, while targets in the center are rooted for 1.5 seconds. Aim the center at an enemy whose movement is already restricted by allied control or your team’s positioning.
The landing also creates an eight-second Frost Storm that continuously applies Frostbite and doubles its damage. Place it across a contested approach or around enemies already committed to fighting. After landing, pressure targets inside the storm and save Winter’s Pursuit to catch a Frostbitten Hero trying to leave.
